Membership in the FOP also has many benefits in the form of special programs and discounts from retailers and service providers. The following is a partial list of the benefits available.
The National Grand Lodge has numerous programs available. We will not attempt to repeat descriptions of these many programs and services here. Please visit the National Grand Lodge website for further information. We will call your attention to two programs well believe are of critical importance to every law enforcement officer.
The Fraternal Order of Police-Legal Plan, Inc. was created by the National F.O.P. to administer the F.O.P. Legal Defense Plan. This program is designed specifically to cover the law enforcement exposures faced by members of the FOP. The Legal Plan pays legal defense costs on behalf of participating members for: administrative; civil; and criminal actions and proceedings when the participant is acting within the scope of their law enforcement employment duties.
For the law enforcement professional, duty related legal defense protection is a necessity as the frequency and cost of allegations against peace officers continues to rise. The F.O.P. Legal Plan offers you an affordable and comprehensive coverage plan.
The F.O.P. maintains an office in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill, where a full-time professional staff actively lobbies Congress and the Administration on the issues most important to rank-and-file law enforcement officers. The National Legislative Program is the most active and comprehensive of any law enforcement organization in Washington.
An example of how important and effective have been the efforts of this program is the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act that authorizes off duty and retired officers to carry their firearms anywhere in the nation. For several years the FOP led the fight for passage of this law in Congress and was the principal reason this law came into being. This law was not popularly supported in Congress several years ago, but it was the tenacious efforts of the Legislative Office and the thousands of FOP members who wrote their representatives at their urging that finally prevailed. This is leadership and results and this is why the FOP is the preeminent voice of Law Enforcement.

Many of these programs are unfortunately only regionally available. We can not hope to list or maintain a proper list of their programs and advise you to visit their website for more information.
The State Lodge operates a toll-free,24-hour hotline, 1-866-535-1078 for law enforcement officers. The Critical Incident Support Team provides law enforcement officers seeking assistance with peer support or social services, a confidential program to receive the help they need. CIST will find a professional organization or program that the officer can contact. ALL calls are confidential and no information about the officer is recorded. Whether the office seeks assistance with an alcohol or gambling problem or is having marital problems, CIST will find them help.
The chaplain is to minister to the needs of officers as requested. All information is kept confidential. Religion and martial issues are discussed only as requested by the officer. Associate Chaplains are to be Christian friends, who meet officers' needs on a one-to-one basis by listening, counseling and/or referring individuals to other resources as is appropriate in each individual's situation. As requested or deemed appropriate, Associate Chaplains provide spiritual guidance, counseling, comfort in times of crisis and such physical help as he/she is equipped to provide on an emergency basis. Associate Chaplains are not intended to replace an individual's own clergy.
