An important element of the Lodge is to assist members in their professional development through educational opportunities. Below are listed a few such programs that have been identified as available to DVA Police Officers free of charge, or at a modest cost. Became the Lodge membership is dispersed throughout the country, regional training opportunities are not listed. Members who reside in the State of Illinois should consult the Illinois State Grand Lodge website to review the many great programs available there. Any member who has knowledge of training courses or desires to share his knowledge, should contact the Lodge at the general email address and notify us so that every member can benefit from such opportunities.

Emergency Management Institute

The Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Management Institute (EMI), offers more than fifty independent study courses. These are self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general public. Most of their courses are interactive courses that you can take directly over the internet. All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment. DVA Police Officers are qualified to enroll in these courses.

Each Independent Study Course includes lessons with practice exercises and a final examination. Students who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI. Course completion times vary from two to fourteen hours, depending on the course and the student's background. College credit can be obtained after successful completion of a course.
