New Concerns about Dog Actvities have been voiced by Downtown Preparitory School ( Hester ). Members of LHS and local neighbors met with school officials to discuss their concerns and best ways to address them. The school is upset by the constant droppings found on the grounds, pets bothering non-pet people, dogs in the children's play areas and the use of the water fountains to give animals a drink. A flyer stating these concerns has been created as a hand-out for dog walkers who use the school grounds. If you would like a copy of the flyer, please contact LHS Chairman, Bob Walker.

LHS asks that everyone abide by the rules so that the old Hester grounds may remain a useable area for pet excerise and community socializing.

October 2006

Mr. Funk, Principal of Lincoln High School announced the finalized plans for the redevelopment of the campus athletic grounds. In the plans, there is call for much less fencing than orginally scheduled, leaving greater portion of the feild as open space. Most of the area toward Dana will remain as 'turf' with the majority of fencing concentrated around the old baseball field and a new softball area at the football stadium end of the grounds. Construction will begin in mid to late May, after the baseball season is concluded and will continue through the summer and fall of 2007.

Click here for a downloadable detailed Map ( PDF) of the finalized development scheme.

New Neighborhood Dog Park Opens in San Jose

A new neighborhood style dog park is now open. Located near downtown at Delmas and Park, the new 17,000 square foot strip of land runs adjacent to Highway 87 and is easily accessible to Lincoln Hound Society members.

The park , a long, narrow strip of land, donated by the VTA, was in the planning for over four years by the PRNS, and provides adequate romping room for our four-footed friends and comes with $100,000 worth of amenities, which include picnic tables, benches and a water fountain that also serves two-footed companions.

LHS asks that all members give the new dog park a try, and then write a letter to the City of San Jose Parks and Rec Department. Let city officials know we appreciate their continued efforts on behalf of our canine friends.

Please forward your letters to:
Steve Roemer, Parks Manager, (PRNS) Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services

Welcome to the Pack Party loads of fun!!pudding

July 2005 Lincoln Hound Society's 'DOG DAYS at Lincoln' a Rousing Success!

At first count, our event had attendance in the neighborhood of 500 guests, give or take 80+ non-registered guests and our official LHS roster grew by 45 NEW members! Thank you and Welcome to the Lincoln Hound Society.

Not counting all of our wonderful LHS event volunteers, 26 current members attended and paid their annual dues in support of our free-roam park movement. Given that this was our first attempt at a public event, things ran beautfully - with only a minimum of glitches.

More details will be posted as we review the event. In the meanwhile, photos are being posted as they come in for you to enjoy. They are to be found on the event page.

Looks like the Lincoln Hound So ciety's Free-roam Park movement is on its way!

May 2005 Lincoln Hound Society K9 Clean-Team Efforts Well Received

The Lincoln Hound Society has only been part of the city-wide PRNS ( Parks & Rec Dept) Anti-Litter Campaign for two weeks, and already response from the general public and the school administration has been remarkable.

LHS members who have been picking up trash at Lincoln, Hoover and Hester schools, have been approached by other dog walkers, ball players and the general citizen who have voiced their appreciation of our efforts to help keep our community litter-free. On several occasions, people have joined in on the trash pick-up in a spontaneous response to having our active LHS volunteers present.

On the official side, we have received positive comments directly from the principal, an assistant-principal and the chief facilities custodian about our efforts to keep Lincoln grounds trash free. The students may get their prom after all!

How YOU can help!

We still seek 10 more LHS members who would like to help out on our eco-minded, community service project. Those who join in will receive, free of charge, a city anti-litter kit which includes, bags, safety gloves, a pickup tool and a vest .We have marked the vests with the ID of “Lincoln Hound Society Volunteer,” to help promote visibility of our efforts.

All we ask of our volunteers is to perform a pick-up service – at your own place, pace and time of your own choosing (like when walking your dog) – while wearing the vest to identify our group as a civic minded organization. We also hope to have one monthly group effort, followed by a fun activity.

To join in and help not only the
Lincoln Hound Society, but Lincoln High School, the community, the City of San Jose and PRNS, but also the environment, please contact our K9 Clean-Team Chair, Bob Walker at 244-2535.

Lincoln Dog Park Idea Lives On!

Between 20-30 Society Members attended the Parks & Rec meeting on Wednesday night and gave voice to our sincerity and support of the proposed Lincoln Dog Park. Althought Steve Rommer of the Parks & Rec Dept did not recommend further consideration of the school grounds as a potential dog park, our show of support and resolve have managed to keep the concept alive in the planninng commissions agenda. More details will be posted soon.

TIME TO STEP UP and demonstrate YOUR support for the Lincoln Dog Park. Please donate some time and effort to our cause. Contact LHS Co-Chair Bob Walker to VOLUNTEER your talents!

Proposed Midtown Community Park Open for Dog Park Consideration

A new midtown community sports park is under consideration by the City Council. It is only in the proposal stage and there is a long way to go before anything substantial will be decided. Councilmember Ken Yeager and his Assistant Megan Doyle have promised to keep the Lincoln Hound Society informed of any and all developments and planning meetings.

The proposed location for the complex is the old Del Monte Packing plant off Auzerias Avenue. Councilmember Yeager suggested that there should be plenty of space remaining to consider the inclusion of a dog park.

It is suggested that all society members voice their support of this location, rather than the airport plan under consideration by the Parks & Rec Department. It is better situated to be a true community park, and there would be no low flying aircraft to scare the living daylights out of our canine friends.

Los Gatos Creek County Park Dog Park Update

The City of Campbell Public Works Department and the County of Santa Clara Parks and Recreation Department are working toward the development of an off-leash dog park within Los Gatos Creek County Park.

The City of Campbell has allocated $250,000 for design and construction of the off-leash dog park. In addition, the City has received a contribution from the County of Santa Clara, through Supervisor Jim Beal's office, for $50,000 and the Town of Los Gatos anticipates contributing $25,000 to the project. Private donations, to date, have been received in the amount of $2,236. A final conceptual design has been developed and is posted on the City's website in the What's New section.

Presently, the County of Santa Clara is working on a waterline project that will provide water to the future dog park, as well as to other locations within Los Gatos Creek County Park. Concurrently, the City of Campbell is developing the final plans and specifications for the dog park. Upon successful completion of the County's waterline project, the City will call for bids on the final dog park plans and specifications.Assuming the County waterline project is completed as scheduled, it is anticipated that the dog park project will be under construction by the Summer of 2005.

San Jose Unified School District Security Office Asks for Society Help

A group of kids attempted to set fire to Lincoln High School AND Hoover Middle School Thursday night.12/2/04 They attacked Lincoln TWICE.

In the first attempt, several trash cans filled with paper were placed against the athletic field 'temporaries' classrooms ( near where many Hound Society members gather!) and set fire to them. The group then went to Hoover and repeated the same technique.

Not to be outdone, they returned to Lincoln ( even though investigators were already alerted), broke into the boys lockerroom and poured flamable liquid. They then set the fluid on fire.

The Security Department of the San Jose Unified School District has approached the Lincoln Hound Society and asked us to become the 'eyes and ears' in safe guarding the schools.

PLEASE stay alert to any and all suspicious activity on district school grounds. Please report anything IMMEDIATELY at:

1 (800) 318-2222 at ANY TIME, day/night/weekends/holidays- 24/7.

And DON'T Shy away from a SJUSD Security truck or officer. Go up to them and introduce yourself as a card carrying member of the Lincoln Hound Society. Explain about us, if they don't already know. They need us now and this is a prefect opportunity to prove that we mean what we say in our support of the school and in building a strong unified community!

Please write down the number and URL for SJUSD Security.

Oct. 28. COMMUNITY OUTREACH MEETING WELL ATTENDED

Over 80 people attended the Wednesday night Community Meeting regarding the Lincoln Dog Park proposal, with attendees both pro and con. A lively Q&A session followed a well presented program from the scheduled speakers.

The evening was opened by a welcome speech and overview presented by San Jose Councilmember, Ken Yeager.

Speakers included, Chris Funk, Principal of Lincoln High School, presenting the park proposal, followed by Jon Cicirelli, Deputy Director, Animal Care and Services Division, speaking on the county Animal policies and closed by Steve Roemer, Manager, Parks and Recreation , with very interesting insights on both concepts and planned dog parks in San Jose City Districts 3 and 6, including the proposed Lincoln park.

For more detailed information , please read the article in the 11/04 issue of the Rose Garden Resident. or use this link to read it on line.

Note: The meeting will also be featured in the 11/18 edition of METRO. Please pick up a copy of interested.

Sept 25. ACS Grand Opening Great Success.

Around 100 people attended the 11am opening ceremonies, but soon the front and rear parking lots were filled to over-flowing as thousands of pet owners and the curious descended on brand new state-of-the-art animal shelter. The 43,500-square-foot facility is located at 2750 Monterey Road and features its own veterinary hospital, dog-training site and education center and room after room of specialized adoption areas.

The Facility is mind-blowing and if you didn't attend the festivities, you should make it a point to visit in the near future.

One interesting feature at the opening was a DOG PARK table. It appears that San jose has three existing parks, one under construction and seven more proposed. Lincoln was not listed as one of the seven! We need to Rectify that as soon as possible.

The Dog parks listed are as follows:

Existing Under Construction Proposed
Miyuki Dog Park
Miyuki Drive and Santa Teresa Blvd.

Ryland Dog Park
San Pedro and North 1st Street (tiny!)

Watson Dog park
East Jackson and 22nd. Street

Fontana Dog Park
Golden Oak and Paseo Pueblo
Groundbreaking due 2004
Willow Street /Frank Bramhall Park
Camden Community Center
Delmas Avenue
Guadalupe Gardens
Penitencia Creek
Saratoga Creek
Wallenburh
