Solar
Mexico is happy to report another successful summer trip. Jason West
along with two students, Riley Flowers and Liz Stewart, spent 11 days
in Mexico installing five more solar electric systems near the city of
Matehuala, San Luis Potosi and assessing new potential projects in San
Luis Potosi and in the state of Queretaro. Solar Mexico is in its
second year of collaboration with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a
student group at the University of North Carolina that helped plan,
fund, and staff the 2009 trip to Mexico.

Seven household
electric systems were installed in three rural communities near
Matehuala, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, subsidized through the Solar Mexico
project. The seven systems provide clean electricity and light
for 35 people. Jason West worked together with representatives of
FMDR and local residents to install the systems.

Solar
HotPot Demonstration - March 2005
|
|
Solar Mexico partnered with Solar
Household Energy, Inc.
to conduct demonstrations of solar-powered HotPot ovens in Tanque de
Dolores and nearby communities. Solar Mexico helped arranged for
demonstrations of the HotPot to be given by Heike Hoedt of SHE, both
for the members of the communities and for the employees of the Mexican
Foundation for Rural Development FMDR who work with other
communities. Solar Mexico also provided subsidies for HotPots to
be purchased at half price (using funds from private donations).
Results have been very encouraging. Many families in this region
now use the HotPots regularly, and because they are inexpensive, they
can be a good way to help many families, relieve the demand for wood in
the Mexican desert, and reduce labor and exposure to indoor air
pollution. Learn about the HotPots on our technologies
page -
pictures of the HotPots in these communities are forthcoming.
